The Gunnison Country is a geographically isolated part of the Rocky Mountains on the western slope of Colorado. It is the upper Gunnison River drainage and it’s tributaries. Historically the Ute Indians lived and hunted here. In more contemporary times, ranching, mining and recreation have been the main industries.
Geographically isolated means fewer people, no interstate highways, small towns and friendly attitudes. Western slope, western style, a friendly cowboy country attitude that we are sure you will appreciate. Lush green meadows, rolling sage hills, forests, grand mountains, rivers, lakes, streams, wildflowers, wildlife and wild places. Experience the Gunnison Country.
The Gunnison Country is proud to have 5 Wilderness areas in it. The West Elk Wilderness is over 175,000 acres of rugged mountains from 7000 to 13000 feet in elevation. It has over 200 miles of constructed trails. The LaGarita Wilderness has almost 130,000 acres of pristine beauty with one of Colorado’s 14000 foot peaks in it and 175 miles of trails. The Fossil Ridge Wilderness has over 38.000 acres and 22 miles of trails. The Powderhorn Wilderness area is about 61,500 acres with 45 miles of trails and has the distinction of having been where, back in the winter of 1874, Alfred Packer ate the party of people he was guiding through to Lake City. Today’s Gunnison Outfitters and guides won’t be eating you in the Wilderness, they will be feeding and taking care of you while showing you all of the wonders of these wild places.
The Gunnison Gorge Wilderness is the 5th Gunnison Country Wilderness and one of the areas main attractions. This cut in the earth is breath taking. Stand on the rim and look at the river below. Almost straight down and well over 1000 feet below.
Gunnison Country Wilderness totals about 650 square miles of beauty and there are several times that much Gunnison Country that is open National Forest and BLM lands for you to explore and enjoy. Cabins, lodges, horseback, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and more. Gunnison Outfitters have the equipment and the knowledge to show you the best there is here.
We hope you will come and enjoy the best of the Gunnison Country with one of the best Gunnison Country Outfitters. |
